The whole "are racecar drivers athletes" argument that is, but...
...ESPN is showing professional bowling right now.

ath•lete ('ć? lit)
n.
a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, coordination, stamina, or strength.
I believe the dictionary says yes.

Really good bowlers are definitely athletes. Serious bowling is so rough on your body. Just shreds your elbow and wrist.
Bowling's not a sport though. It's a game, like Golf. And racing isn't a sport either. It's an activity, like fishing.

ESPN
E ntertainment & SP orts N etwork.
I think bowling falls under the "entertainment" portion, not the sports portion.

NASCAR drivers are athletes, then?

Fuck off with the 'bowlers aren't athletes' thing.
Bowling takes skill, and it's a competition. Is it an intense physical activity? No, but that's not what defines 'sport' or 'athlete'. Regardless, the amount of practice it takes to reach the level of the PBA bowlers you see on TV isn't exactly a cakewalk.
It's more of a sport than poker, which ESPN shows.

Nah. Doesn't really require skill, strength, training, or anything like that. Unless there's some kind of competition I'm unaware of.
Also, if wanking is shredding your elbow and/or wrist, you're doing it wrong. This has been a pubic service announcement. (see what I did there?)

Not everyone that bowls treats it as a drinking activity. PBA tour bowling =/= going bowling with your buds

When it was first started it was E ntertainment & S ports P rogramming N etwork.

But that's boring. If I were in charge of the PBA, bowlers would have to take a shot for every pin they miss.

I would much rather watched skilled bowlers bowl skillfully than idiots get drunk.
I fucking hate the people that show up to bowling league just so they can drink. They are the most annoying people in the whole bowling alley. I show up to bowl, not listen to some fat bitch scream about god knows what because she's drunk off her ass.

That definition loses all of it's credibility by including fishing.

Where did I state, implicitly or explicitly, that bowling wasn't athletic?

I have that as my wallpaper.

It wasn't necessarily directed at you per se, just a general 'I'm tired of this' statement.
Besides, I felt like you implied it because you were bringing up the 'are racecar driver's athletes' question while pointing out that PBA was on TV, as if you were criticizing bowling and bowlers in comparison to race car drivers.

Middle English, from Latin athleta, from Greek athlts, fromathlein to contend for a prize, from athlon prize, contest
So anyone who competes for a prize is an athlete.

The only thing I was really implying was that if bowlers could be considered athletes (and I'm not doubting the skill that is required to bowl at a professional level), then any discussion about whether racecar drivers are athletes is essentially moot.
